Io C 080523
About correlations between
Observations from:
Lynchburg, VA by Dave Thomas N2JUP
and
Greenbelt, MD by Jim Thieman GSFCRO

The charts below show interesting correlation between the two Observatories, distant roughly 200 miles.

The timing betwen several strong pulses is close, but the waveforms are not very close.

What are some of the factors leading to the differences ?
----------------------------------------------------
The spectrum of Jovian Decametric radiation is very complex with very fine structure in time scales of minutes to microseconds, and frequency scales of megahertz to kilohertz. Small differences in receiver tuning,  passband, and detection circuits, will produce differences in waveform.

As one example, Ryabov et al 2007, JGR 112, A09206 :

show this interesting spectrum of S bursts, during an Io-A S-burst storm on 15 March 2005

Scintillation effects in the interplanetary plasma

pointed out:

Douglas and Smith 1967, ApJ 148, 885,  is an interesting 21 page paper.
In abstract:

The Earth's Ionosphere
Complex, dynamic, diverse for different sites.
Meteor ionization trails have been observed casting a "shadow" during Jovian Observations !!

Ruggero Ulivastro recently noted the "Dynamic model of the Ionosphere"
found at

interesting, I need to study a lot more about the ionosphere.
